HOW TO SELECT FRAMED ARTWORK
We have all been there, sitting in your home with bare walls is no fun.
However, the thought of selecting artwork is just too much to think about, we understand but have a question; be honest with yourself, how long has “select art for sofa wall” or “find artwork for bedroom” been on your “to-do list?”
Your walls need artwork, but it can be a time consuming stressful task to select artwork for your home or office space, again we hear you and we understand.
Here are a few tips from our designers that will hopefully help and inspire you to get moving!
Where to begin?
Select the wall space first, measure it out so you know what you are working with, having this information will help in the long run and allow you to enjoy selecting the artwork you want for your space. A general rule of thumb for working with a sofa wall is the piece selected should be at least ⅔ of the sofa or larger. Also remember, a small piece of art will not fill a large space no matter how much you love it. (Hint: if you are in love with a small piece of artwork think about having it matted and framed in a larger size to accommodate the space you would like it to fill.)
Pinterest is an excellent tool for decorating. It can be used in various ways from research to inspiration. Use Pinterest to create a board for home artwork selections. Each board now has the ability to be categorized. If you are shopping for two or more rooms simultaneously then we recommend that you organize the board so that the artwork pins to each room. When you reference it later it is allocated on the board category accordingly allowing you to avoid second-guessing the location. (see the gallery below on how to create a board with sections)
Using the Pinterest app on your phone stand in front of the wall holding the phone up to get a feel of what the artwork will look like, if you need more of a visual we encourage printing the picture out and placing on the wall. You can also use a household item or item such as a towel or if you have recently moved the transparent moving film used to protect breakable items works well, cut it to the size of the artwork you would like, and hang it on the wall for a more realistic visual. Tools such as painters tape and transparent film are available to purchase at most hardware or craft stores/sections.
Size is something you have to consider and most of us need the visual, we encourage measuring out each piece on the wall before purchase, this also ensures you purchase a piece that you love but one that also is the correct size.
Remember artwork defines the owner and also the space. Take the time to find pieces you love but also purchase with intention so those beloved pieces fit perfectly into your space. Oh and have fun with it- Life is way too short!
